Feb. 1 to 28, 2013: 28 Days, 42 Museums, 50% Off!

February is Museum Month in San Diego!
Now in its 24th year, San Diego Museum Month is the time of year when San Diego individuals, families, visitors, explorers, adventurers, history buffs, art enthusiasts, animal and plant lovers, culture-seekers – everyone – can visit participating San Diego County museums and institutions for half price all month long with a free Museum Month Pass.
A long standing San Diego tradition drawing over 35,000 visitors last year, Museum Month was created in 1989 to promote awareness of San Diego’s museums, historical sites, educational institutions and cultural offerings. Since that time the promotion has grown to become a cultural tradition on a level witnessed by very few cities in the country.
“Museum Month will serve as an ideal platform for culture-seekers to discover new inspirations in 2013,” said Jessica Crawford, president of San Diego Museum Council’s Board of Directors. “Thanks to Macy’s, we’re able showcase the diversity of museums San Diego has to offer at an exceptional discount.”
Here is a sample of some of the activities to explore during Museum Month 2013:
San Diego Air & Space Museum will host the widely popular Ripley’s Believe It Or Not exhibit for the first time in San Diego since 1935. Opening on February 1st, the exhibit will be filled with strange and bizarre items from around the world that inspired a franchise including books, comic books and television shows.
Museum of Contemporary Art (La Jolla), in collaboration with the Timken Museum of Art and The San Diego Museum of Art, will host Behold, America! Art of the United States from Three San Diego Museums through February 10th. Bringing together the finest artwork from three San Diego art museums, Behold America! includes an array of paintings, sculptures and photography from the colonial period to present. Additionally, the downtown location will open the Scoli Acosta: Elementalisthmus exhibition on February 4th, featuring the artwork of Los Angeles-based artist Scoli Acosta.
The New Children’s Museum in downtown San Diego will continue to host its TRASH Exhibition filled with original, contemporary art designed and transformed by trash. In preparation for a new art and food-focused exhibition opening in Fall 2013, guests can visit the “Test Kitchen” to catch a peek at some of the developing artwork that will later be showcased. Additionally, the museum will host a Valentine’s Day drop-in activity on February 14th for guests to create and design heartwarming cards with custom stamping tools.
San Diego Natural History Museum (theNAT) opens Dr. Entomo’s Palace of Exotic Wonders on February 22nd, featuring bizarre and unusual insects from around the world. Fashioned as a circus sideshow attraction, the exhibit will include a special San Diego-only section that highlights the remarkably odd insects that crawl around and inhabit San Diego County.
Museum of Photographic Arts in Balboa Park will reveal a new exhibition of the international travels by photographer Jessica Lange called UNSEEN: The Photographs of Jessica Lange. Featuring images taken from Mexico, Ethiopia, Romania, Russia, Finland, Italy, France and the United States, Lange exposes the beauty and mystery found in her travels through each photograph.
LUX Art Institute will feature an exhibit by the Spanish-born sculptor Carlos Vega throughout the entire month of February. Originally created from large-scale malleable metal palates, Vega’s artwork includes carved lead panels that hint to his traditional Spanish heritage.
Birch Aquarium at Scripps invites guests to dive deep into an exploration of the sea to discover the world of kelp during the month of February. Programs include weekly dive shows and interactive projects through Think Tank, a new collaborative onsite learning experience that is included with admission.

Familiar holiday traditions are taking on a “wild” twist this Yuletide season as part of the Jungle Bells celebration at the San Diego Zoo. During the annual event, the Zoo is transformed into a wild, whimsical wonderland filled with dazzling light displays, tasty treats, a nightly tree lighting ceremony, melodious bell ringers, jumping elves, and the Zoo’s special animal encounters. Head over to the San Diego Zoo to be cheered by a cheetah or awed by an armadillo - after all, ’tis the season!
Free with admission to the Zoo, there are plenty of old and new Jungle Bells traditions for families to enjoy: take a ride on the North Pole miniature train outside the Zoo entrance; share your wish list with the jolly ol’ elf himself at Santa’s Workshop; find out who’s really stirring during Dr. Zoolittle’s The Night Before Christmas show at the Children’s Zoo; applaud the Jumpin’, Jammin’ Elves as they perform astounding acrobatic feats to holiday tunes in the Urban Jungle; and see the Zoo from the perspective of the most famous reindeer of all aboard Rudolph’s Skyfari aerial tram. For those looking for the wildest of holiday Zoo experiences, “Animal Magic for the Holidays” offers special encounters with the Zoo’s animal friends at Discovery Outpost.
New to Jungle Bells this year is Chocolate Town, where guests can marvel at a Chocolate Holiday Tree made up of chocolate-colored plants; meet the mayor of Chocolate Town as he welcomes visitors; choose yummy chocolate morsels from a brightly decorated Chocolate Food Truck; encounter favorite animal ambassadors; and see the all-new 12 Days of Christmas light display set to music.
At the 4-D Theater, experience the San Diego Zoo premiere of Ice Age: A Mammoth Christmas. The holiday movie starring everyone’s favorite wooly mammoths has Sid accidentally destroying Manny’s favorite holiday decoration, the traditional Christmas rock. Convinced he’s now on Santa’s naughty list, Sid and the gang head to the North Pole to see Santa and chaos ensues. Ice Age: A Mammoth Christmas is sure to delight guests of all ages. Tickets may be purchased at the theater ticket booth.
No holiday celebration is complete without colorful and twinkling lights and Jungle Bells is no exception. There are more than 50,000 individual lights used in the Jungle Bells décor and displays, all recently replaced with LED bulbs to save energy. To view the more than 40 animal-shaped light sculptures around the Zoo, guests may hop aboard the Tinseltown Trolley on Front Street and take a mini tour. Another light display not to be missed is the “Blitzen” Light Experience at Treehouse Plaza.
Hungry holiday revelers can visit Albert’s Restaurant where the Zoo’s talented chefs are cooking up scrumptious holiday meals, and offering its “Happy Holidays Happen” menu from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm, featuring discounted drinks and appetizers. Or grab a bite to eat and sip on a beverage at the Zoo’s Sandwich Company and watch Memory Lane, a film montage of funny and heartwarming snippets from holiday movies and TV shows past and present.
And for last-minute holiday shoppers, Jungle Bells is a great place to pick up holiday gifts. In addition to the many items available in the Zoo’s gift shops and gifts of Zoo memberships, the Adopt an Animal program allows people to give a gift that is unique, fun, tax deductible and easy. Plus, all proceeds go to the San Diego Zoo’s global wildlife conservation efforts as well as enrichment items for the animals at the Zoo and Safari Park. The Adopt an Animal booth is located on Front Street during Jungle Bells. For $20.00, gift recipients receive an adoption certificate, fact sheet, an animal plush, and souvenir photo of their animal.
