Free Admission to Sea Life Aquarium : Underwater Parks Day 2010

Sea Life Aquarium celebrates the second annual Underwater Parks Day on Saturday, January 16, 2010, with kid-friendly activities designed to raise awareness of soon-to-be designated “underwater parks” or Marine Protected Areas. In celebration of Underwater Parks Day, Sea Life Aquarium has organized a family-friendly festival and is also offering an online coupon for free admission for two children with each paid adult.

Two Free Child Admissions Offer

In honor of Underwater Parks Day, guests will receive TWO free child admissions to Sea Life Aquarium with the purchase of one adult admission. The 3-for-1 Admission Deal is valid on Saturday, January 16, 2010.

To take advantage of this special 3-for-1 Admission Offer, PRINT THIS UNDERWATER PARKS DAY AT SEA LIFE AQUARIUM COUPON and present it at the Sea Life Aquarium/Legoland Resort ticket booth when purchasing your full price Adult Admission. To receive the two free Child Admissions, you must purchase your full price Adult Admission in person at the ticket booth. An original coupon must be exchanged at the ticket booth at the time of ticket purchase. Only two complimentary child admissions will be issued per coupon. The two free Child Admissions offer is valid on Saturday, January 16, 2010 only and is valid only on the day of purchase. The free admission offer cannot be applied to pre-purchased tickets, online ticket sales, or combined with any other offers. Free admission does not include parking or admission to Legoland California. Additional restrictions may apply. Children under 2 are admitted free.

Underwater Parks Day Activities

LEGO Guests who attend the Underwater Parks Day celebration will enjoy a day full of family friendly activities that are specifically geared to families with young children. Guests will have a chance to create a personalized take-home habitat, add to the Happy Habitat Mural and visit a mini Conservation Expo with hands-on exhibits to learn how their family can get involved in caring for our ocean locally.

Underwater Parks Day is an effort by Southern California aquariums and marine science centers to educate Southern Californians about Underwater Parks and to communicate that marine protected areas are a critical tool in replenishing the fish populations and restoring the health of our coastal waters.

Local ocean conservation organizations including Batiquitos Lagoon Foundation, Coastkeeper, I Love A Clean San Diego, Ocean Discovery Institute, San Diego Oceans Foundation and San Elijo State Beach will be taking part in the Underwater Parks Day event at Sea Life Aquarium, hosting information booths and other activities for families throughout the day.

Renowned local artist Teresa Espaniola, who is known for painting seascapes as well as for her unique works using found objects and beach trash, will be leading the Happy Habitat Mural project. With Espanola’s help, children will add their own sea creatures to a large ocean mural in the Discovery Zone, demonstrating what a healthy, happy underwater habitat should look like.

Espaniola was born in California. Since childhood, she has enjoyed crafting, painting and exhibiting her work in art shows. The ocean has always been a love in her life, from tide pooling in California to living in Hawaii, immersing herself in surfing and diving and meeting many ocean dwellers face to face. Having experienced the best of the ocean, she now brings awareness about the worst of it through her art and working with children. Nine of Espanola’s “gARTbage” works, using local beach trash to create beautiful art, will be on display during the event.

Other Aquariums hosting Underwater Parks Day events include Cabrillo Marine Aquarium in San Pedro, Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach, Ocean Institute in Dana Point, Birch Aquarium at Scripps in La Jolla, Santa Monica Pier Aquarium and Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History’s Ty Warner Sea Center, but Sea Life is the only one whose activities are focused on families with young children.

Underwater Parks Day at Sea Life Aquarium takes place from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm on Saturday, January 16, 2010. All activities are included in the cost of Aquarium admission.

Sea Life Aquarium at Legoland Resort is located in San Diego North, steps away from Legoland California (it shares the same parking lot) at One Legoland Drive, Carlsbad, CA, 92008.

San Diego Bay Parade of Lights 2009

December 13 & 20, 2009 – Parade of Lights Sets Sail Along the San Diego Bay

More than 80,000 people are expected to cluster at San Diego’s downtown waterfront on Sunday, December 13, 2009 and Sunday, December 20, 2009 for the 38th annual San Diego Bay Parade of Lights. Kicking-off with a fireworks extravaganza at 5:30 pm, this free, family friendly, distinctly California celebration features boats decorated for the holiday season that will sail from the east end of Shelter Island into the downtown waterfront and Coronado areas.

A highly anticipated event in the San Diego community, more than 80 vessels take to the water for the parade. This year’s parade celebrates “Christmas at the Zoo” with boats of all kinds judged for creative lighting, decorations and crowd-engaging fun.

The Parade Route:

The Parade starts off at the Point Loma end of Shelter Island and proceeds along Shelter Island, passing by the Bay Club Hotel and Marina, Humphrey’s Half Moon Inn and Restaurant and the Bali Hai at the end of Shelter Island. The Parade then proceeds to Harbor Island, passing close to shore from Tom Hams Restaurant, past The Boathouse Restaurant and on past the Island Prime Restaurant. Next, the Parade makes its way across the bay to the Embarcadero at the end of Grape Street, turns and heads south down the quay wall to the Maritime Museum, loops around the Berkeley to the Star of India and Anthony’s Restaurant, then loops around the Cruise Ship Terminal and USS Midway to pass by Seaport Village and the Embarcadero Marina Park. Finally, the Parade makes its way past the Convention Center and the Hilton San Diego and then crosses the bay to Tidelands Park where it turns north along the Coronado shoreline to Peohe’s Restaurant and ends off of the Old Ferry Landing Village.

The parade takes approximately 1 to 1 1/2 hours to pass any given point along the parade route, with approximate arrival times along the route as follows: Shelter Island (start of parade) – 5:30 pm; Harbor Island – 6:00 pm; The Embarcadero – 6:30 pm; Seaport Village – 7:00 pm; and the Ferry Landing on Coronado – 7:30 pm.

Real savings on all you do!

Best Places To See the Parade:

There are several places to view the Parade of Lights around San Diego Bay. However, with more than 80,000 spectators viewing the Parade of Lights, some places can get crowded early.

Less crowded viewing areas include the north and south ends of the Embarcadero, the bayside pathway along Coronado and the waterfront park behind Seaport Village. Parking in the area fills quickly, so spectators are urged to use public transit to reach downtown. Trolley stations with parking lots that provide convenient service to the northern Embarcadero area include Fashion Valley, Old Town and American Plaza.

The San Diego Bay Parade of Lights will be held on Sunday, December 13, 2009 and again on Sunday, December 20, 2009, beginning at 5:30 pm with a fireworks display and ending at approximately 9:00 pm. This family friendly event is free to the public.

See you at the Parade of Lights, San Diego!

New Movie Release : Disney’s The Princess and the Frog

Release Dates: Wednesday, November 25, 2009 (Limited); Friday, December 11, 2009 (Nationwide)

From the creators of The Little Mermaid and Aladdin comes a modern twist on a classic tale, The Princess and the Frog, a joyous gumbo of adventurous storytelling, captivating characters, offbeat comedy and memorable music. The Princess and the Frog marks Walt Disney Animation Studios’ return to hand-drawn animation, a return to the classic fairy tale and a return to the musical.

In the all-new feature The Princess and the Frog, Walt Disney Animation Studios serves up a an animated comedy set in the great city of New Orleans, featuring a beautiful girl named Tiana, a frog prince who desperately wants to be human again, and a fateful kiss that leads them both on a hilarious adventure through the mystical bayous of Louisiana.

Everyone knows the story in which a princess finds true love by kissing a frog that magically turns into her handsome prince. In this telling of the story, the girl still kisses a frog, but the result is quite different; it’s only one of dozens of surprises in this mix of wacky humor, thrills, melody and emotion. Love eventually finds a way – between a prince and a princess…between frogs, perhaps…or maybe between a firefly and the object of his affection. But it’s clear that the most important details lie well beneath the skin. The film features Disney’s newest princess, its next great fairy tale and the Studio’s return to the Disney musical, reminiscent of classics like Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King and Aladdin.

The Princess and the Frog marks the return to hand-drawn animation from the revered team of John Musker and Ron Clements, with music by Oscar-winning composer Randy Newman. Presented by Walt Disney Pictures, The Princess and the Frog is the 49th animated feature film from Disney, a tradition established nearly 75 years ago with the release of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. The Princess and the Frog hops into to movie theaters nationwide on Friday, December 11, 2009.

Buy your tickets to Disney’s The Princess and the Frog in advance and receive a free iTunes download of the song Dig A Little Deeper from the original soundtrack.

The Princess and the Frog – The Story

A New Twist on an Old Tale - The Princess and the Frog is, of course, inspired by the fairy tale The Frog Prince from the Brothers Grimm. But the filmmakers had to put their own spin on the story. On the bend of the Big River, New Orleans sparkles with opulence, adventure, romance, music and magic. Here in the “once upon a time” of the 1920s Jazz Age, among the wrought iron balconies and beckoning alleyways of the French Quarter and environs, a most unusual tale unfolds.

Tiana is an attractive, independent, hardworking young woman. She has no time for romance and the dalliance of dreams; she has a love of cooking, and plans to be a successful restaurateur, fulfilling the love of food that is her father’s legacy. But in spite of her hard work and diligence, obstacles keep Tiana’s goals out of reach.

Down on the Mississippi riverfront, a handsome and gregarious jazz fanatic has arrived in the Crescent City: the royal outcast Prince Naveen from far-off Maldonia. A little spoiled, irresponsible and indolent, perhaps, Naveen has made his way through life on his good looks and undeniable charm. His position attracts the evil Dr. Facilier, a practitioner of dark magic, whose effort to steal Naveen’s royal privilege results in the handsome prince’s transformation into a frog.

Naveen’s attempt to use the old fairy-tale standby of a kiss to return him to human form only results in Tiana being transformed, too, and the amphibious twosome find themselves cast adrift in the Louisiana bayou, pursued by frog hunters and seeking the good magic of a mysterious 197-year-old priestess named Mama Odie. Helping them along in their precarious, awkward, but truly laughable journey are a lovesick Cajun firefly named Ray and a Jazz-playing alligator named Louis; and although their way is fraught with peril, the contrary pair bring out each other’s better selves, overcome their differences and their obstacles, and discover that dreams do come true – but never in the way one might expect.

In the end, love wins out, and the differences that seemed so very important before seem to fade away into the bayou.

December Nights 2009 at Balboa Park

December 4 & 5, 2009: December Nights 2009 -Free Festival in Balboa Park

San Diego’s favorite kick-off to the holiday season, December Nights 2009 takes places this year on Friday, December 4, 2009 and Saturday, December 5, 2009 in Balboa Park.

The largest free community festival in San Diego, December Nights is expected to attract more than 300,000 visitors. The beloved San Diego event features sparkling lights, theatrical and musical entertainment, and food, food and more food throughout the Park. And once again this year, in the spirit of the holidays, participating Balboa Park museums will open their doors to the public free of charge from 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm both evenings.

Entertainment, wonderful food and holiday cheer are all part of this classic San Diego celebration. Long standing traditions, including: food from around the globe at the International Christmas Festival at the House of Pacific Relations Cottages; the charming Santa Lucia Procession at the San Diego Museum of Man; unique gift shopping at the museum stores and with the artisans of Spanish Village; international choirs, musical and dance presentations from the San Diego Junior Theatre, San Diego Civic Youth Ballet, and more, fill the heart of Balboa Park. In addition, participating museums will be open to the public for free from 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm both evenings.

Be sure to stop by the Prado Holiday Spirits Lounge and Hospitality Tent operated by the Cohn Restaurant Group. Executive Chef Jeff Thurston of The Prado has created a menu that will be offered inside Spirits Lounge for adults 21 and up and also available outside for all ages. Menu items include Kobe beef burgers, crispy green beans with blue cheese dip, The Prado’s famous tortilla soup, and more. The Spirits Lounge offerings include The Prado’s Sangria, Eggnog and Jim Beam, Kahlua Drinks, and Svedka Vodka Cosmopolitans.

In addition, the historic Moreton Bay Fig Tree will be illuminated with a custom and artistic holiday design provided by The Old Globe. The tree will be awash with merry and colorful lights, and will join the Spreckels Organ Pavilion and the California Tower as Balboa Park December Nights‘ holiday icons.

Also returning to December Nights this year is the Palisades Midway, the ultimate family zone with new kid-friendly experiences and family entertainment.

Beautiful displays will light the gorgeous Spanish Revival architecture in the Plaza de Panama’s expanded entertainment area, where San Diego’s own Bon Temps Social Club will entertain guests with some of the best American sounds of the Louisiana Bayou.

The Barona Band of Mission Indians contributes a unique cultural element to the December Nights with My Ancestors’ Village, the re-creation of a traditional Native American village within the heart of Balboa Park. The Village will bring to life the food, culture, and lifestyle that is unique to Barona and the other Indians indigenous to the local region.

San Diego Gas and Electric, A Sempra Energy Utility, again covers the center of the Plaza de Panama with an even larger dazzling – and energy efficient – canopy of holiday lights. Visitors are invited to bring up to three strands of traditional holiday lights, per family, to the SDG&E booth in the Plaza de Panama beneath the light canopy and exchange them for more energy efficient and safer LED holiday lights (while supplies last).

Balboa Park’s December Nights 2009 takes place on Friday, December 4, 2009 from 5:00 pm to 10:00 pm and Saturday, December 5, 2009 from noon to 10:00 pm. Admission to this family friendly event is free. Free admission to the Balboa Park Museums is offered on both nights from 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm.

With so much to do and see, be sure to arrive early and plan to stay late – this one of a kind event is a family favorite and should not be missed!
