Balboa Park : Free Admission on Tuesdays

November 4th, 2006

PROGRAM CHANGE 06/09: Free Admission is now limited to San Diego City and County residents, Active Military and their families only.

With dozens of museums, galleries and theatres to enjoy, it’s no wonder Balboa Park is considered San Diego’s cultural epicenter.

There’s so much to do and see in Balboa Park, even the most diligent visitor will find it impossible to fit it all into a single day. The best way to enjoy Balboa Park is to take it in a little bit at a time. An added bonus to this piecemeal approach is that you can take advantage of the Free Tuesday program.

As a public service, many of Balboa Park’s museums and galleries offer free admission on Tuesdays every month to San Diego City and County residents, Active Military and their families. Free admission is offered on a rotating basis. In other words, not every museum is free on every Tuesday, so it’s important to check the schedule and plan your visit accordingly. Here’s an overview of the Free Tuesday schedule:

First Tuesday of each Month:

  • Reuben H. Fleet Science Center
  • Centro Cultural de la Raza
  • Model Railroad Museum
  • Natural History Museum

Second Tuesday of each Month:

  • Museum of Photographic Arts
  • Museum of San Diego History
  • Veteran’s Museum and Memorial Center

Third Tuesday of each Month:

  • San Diego Art Institute
  • San Diego Museum of Art
  • San Diego Museum of Man
  • Japanese Friendship Garden
  • Mingei International Museum

Fourth Tuesday of each Month:

  • San Diego Air and Space Museum
  • San Diego Automotive Museum
  • San Diego Hall of Champions
  • House of Pacific Relations International Cottages

Regular admission prices apply on the fifth Tuesday of any month.

And now, the “fine print” - a handful of museums are free all year round (such as the Timken Museum of Art); certain museums may restrict the scope of the free admission to the permanent collection and charge an additional fee to view special exhibitions or films; certain museums require proof of residency in San Diego or active military duty. Again, please consult Balboa Park’s Free Tuesday schedule for detailed information.

Enjoy Balboa Park in true San Diego style – take a leisurely stroll through Balboa Park, catch a museum or two and soak it all in…one Tuesday at a time.
