Encinitas : Quail Botanical Gardens

December 10th, 2006

What began as the 30-acre private estate of Charles and Ruth Larabee is known today as the Quail Botanical Gardens. Here, you will find nearly 4,000 plant varieties including rare bamboo groves, desert gardens, a tropical rainforest, California native plants, Mediterranean climate landscapes, an Undersea Succulent Garden, Landscaping for Fire Safety, a subtropical fruit garden and the most recent addition, a Mexican Garden.

Quail Botanical Gardens is also home to Seeds of Wonder, the West Coast’s first interactive children’s garden. At Seeds of Wonder, children have the opportunity to pot their own plants, roll down a grassy hill, play in the secret garden, marvel at the miniature railroad and participate in one of the many daily craft activities.

Quail Botanical Gardens’ mission to inspire people of all ages to connect with plants and nature and to exist as an urban retreat rings especially true during its annual Garden of Lights holiday festivities. Visitors are invited to tour the Gardens ablaze with over 90,000 sparking lights. A number of activities are set up around the Gardens, including crafts for children, marshmallow roasting, live entertainment and photos with Santa.

The Garden of Lights festivities will be held December 7-10, 14-23, and 26-30 from 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm. The cost of admission is: $8.00 for adults; $6.00 for members, seniors, active military and students; $3.00 for children 3-12; and free for children under 3. (Note: there are additional fees for certain activities at the festival.)

Quail Botanical Gardens is located at 230 Quail Gardens Drive in Encinitas.
