San Diego North : ArtSplash 2008 in Carlsbad, CA

ArtSplash, Carlsbad’s unique celebration of the Arts, returns to Armada Drive (immediately above the Carlsbad Flower Fields) for its sixth year. Dubbed “An Arts Adventure for All Ages,” ArtSplash is Carlsbad’s free, two-day family event which promotes and benefits the Arts within North County.
Attracting close to 35,000 visitors each year, ArtSplash is best known for its street paintings by professional and amateur artists who display masterpieces created entirely with chalk. In addition to these incredible street paintings, ArtSplash 2008 will feature: sand sculpturing by Gerry Kirk; special performances by the Fern Street Circus and Hullabaloo; street entertainers; rock-stacking, hat-making and other art opportunities; juried art vendors; and a silent auction of hand painted skimboards, adirondack chairs, beach umbrellas and guitars. A Family Art Carnival designed especially with kids in mind will offer a ferris wheel of fun arts activities at reasonable prices.
New artistic twists to ArtSplash 2008 include famed cheese sculptor Sarah Nep carving a bust of Carlsbad Mayor Claude A. “Bud” Lewis out of a massive hunk of cheddar (previous subjects of Nep’s work include former President Bill Clinton and California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger), glassblowing demonstrations provided by renowned glass artist James Stone and Studio 2 artists painting themselves out of a mural of Maxfield Parrish’s “Ecstasy.”
A revamped Taste at ArtSplash, will offer a 16-restaurant sampling of everything from tostada tidbits and ceviche, to wonton chicken and pulled pork, to pizza and French pastries from local restaurants including: Carlsbad Gourmet; El Puerto Mexican and Seafood; Flippin’ Pizza; French Bakery Cafe; Fresco Trattoria; King’s Fish House; Lola’s Mexican Market and Deli; Mimi’s Cafe; Pelly’s Fish Market and Cafe; Pollos Maria; and Q’s Sports Bar. Taste of ArtSplash will take place on Saturday, September 20, 2008 from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm. Tickets to the Taste of ArtSplash are $20.00 each and must be purchased separately.
Also new to ArtSplash this year, Bellefleur Wine Garden joins the popular Karl Strauss Beer Garden, with additional food vendors offering a variety of refreshments.
ArtSplash 2008 takes place on Armada Drive (above the Carlsbad Flower Fields) on Saturday September 20, 2008 from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm and Sunday, September 21, 2008 from 10:00am to 5:00pm. ArtSplash is a free, family event. Tickets must be purchased separately for Taste at ArtSplash, which runs from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm on Saturday, September 20, 2008. The $20.00 Taste of ArtSplash tickets can be purchased prior to the event at the Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce (760.931.8400) or on site on the day of the event.
