Hoping to catch a movie this week? Here is a list of new movies opening in San Diego on Friday, October 17, 2008:
Max Payne - Based on the legendary, hard-hitting interactive video game, Max Payne tells the story of a maverick cop determined to track down those responsible for the brutal murder of his family and partner. Hell-bent on revenge, his obsessive investigation takes him on a nightmare journey into a dark underworld. As the mystery deepens, Max is forced to battle enemies beyond the natural world and face an unthinkable betrayal. This action packed thriller stars Mark Wahlberg, Mila Kunis, Chris O’Donnell, Beau Bridges, Ludacris, Chris Bridges, Amaury Nolasco and Olga Kurylenko (Kurylenko is the newest “Bond Girl” and will be starring opposite Daniel Craig in the upcoming Bond movie Quantum of Solace, coming to theaters on November 14, 2008).
W. - Whether you love him or hate him, there is no question that George W. Bush is one of the most controversial public figures in recent memory. In an unprecedented undertaking, acclaimed director Oliver Stone brings the life of America’s 43rd President to the big screen as only he can. W. takes viewers through Bush’s eventful life – his struggles and triumphs, how he found both his wife and his faith, and the critical days leading up to Bush’s decision to invade Iraq. This political drama, which carries the tag line “Based on a True Story,” stars Josh Brolin, Elizabeth Banks, James Cromwell, Ellen Burstyn, Thandie Newton and Richard Dreyfuss.
The Secret Life of Bees - Set in South Carolina during the turbulent Civil Rights era, the home of the intelligent and independent honey-making Boatwright sisters is suddenly thrust into upheaval with the arrival of 14 year old Lily Owens and her caretaker Rosaleen, who are seeking refuge. Lily discovers joy in the simple pleasures of life through her deepening relationship with the Boatwrights and soon comes into her own. Lily unexpectedly finds her true home and a family she has always yearned for and realizes that sometimes you must leave home in order to find it. Based on the celebrated best-selling novel, The Secret Life of Bees stars Queen Latifah, Dakota Fanning, Jennifer Hudson, Alicia Keys, Sophie Okonedo, and Paul Bettany.
Sex Drive - Eighteen year old Ian Lafferty sets out on a cross country drive with his best friends Lance and Felicia in order to lose his virginity to a red-hot babe he met on the Internet. But the journey, filled with hilarious misadventures and raunchy escapades, teaches all three more than they expected about life and love. This teen “road trip” comedy stars Josh Zuckerman, Clark Duke, Amanda Crew, James Marsden and Seth Green.
Morning Light - Fifteen young sailors…six months of intense training…one chance at the brass ring. This exciting true-life documentary tells the inspiring story of a group of intrepid and determined young men and women, on the cusp of adulthood, as they embark on life’s first great adventure. Racing a high-performance 52-foot sloop in the TRANSPAC, the most revered of open-ocean sailing competitions, the crew of Morning Light matches wits and skills in a dramatic 2,300 mile showdown against top professionals. From their earliest training sessions in Hawaii conducted by world-class teachers through their test of endurance on the high seas, they form an unbreakable bond in the process of becoming a singular team that is greater than the sum of its parts. Edited by one of the key filmmakers responsible for the acclaimed 2004 surfing documentary, Riding Giants, written and directed by the team of filmmakers behind the recent rock documentary Amazing Journey: The Story of the Who, and the critically acclaimed Once in a Lifetime; The Extraordinary Story of the New York Cosmos, Morning Light will appeal to the sense of adventure in everyone.
