San Diego Bay Parade of Lights 2009

December 7th, 2009

December 13 & 20, 2009 – Parade of Lights Sets Sail Along the San Diego Bay

More than 80,000 people are expected to cluster at San Diego’s downtown waterfront on Sunday, December 13, 2009 and Sunday, December 20, 2009 for the 38th annual San Diego Bay Parade of Lights. Kicking-off with a fireworks extravaganza at 5:30 pm, this free, family friendly, distinctly California celebration features boats decorated for the holiday season that will sail from the east end of Shelter Island into the downtown waterfront and Coronado areas.

A highly anticipated event in the San Diego community, more than 80 vessels take to the water for the parade. This year’s parade celebrates “Christmas at the Zoo” with boats of all kinds judged for creative lighting, decorations and crowd-engaging fun.

The Parade Route:

The Parade starts off at the Point Loma end of Shelter Island and proceeds along Shelter Island, passing by the Bay Club Hotel and Marina, Humphrey’s Half Moon Inn and Restaurant and the Bali Hai at the end of Shelter Island. The Parade then proceeds to Harbor Island, passing close to shore from Tom Hams Restaurant, past The Boathouse Restaurant and on past the Island Prime Restaurant. Next, the Parade makes its way across the bay to the Embarcadero at the end of Grape Street, turns and heads south down the quay wall to the Maritime Museum, loops around the Berkeley to the Star of India and Anthony’s Restaurant, then loops around the Cruise Ship Terminal and USS Midway to pass by Seaport Village and the Embarcadero Marina Park. Finally, the Parade makes its way past the Convention Center and the Hilton San Diego and then crosses the bay to Tidelands Park where it turns north along the Coronado shoreline to Peohe’s Restaurant and ends off of the Old Ferry Landing Village.

The parade takes approximately 1 to 1 1/2 hours to pass any given point along the parade route, with approximate arrival times along the route as follows: Shelter Island (start of parade) – 5:30 pm; Harbor Island – 6:00 pm; The Embarcadero – 6:30 pm; Seaport Village – 7:00 pm; and the Ferry Landing on Coronado – 7:30 pm.

Real savings on all you do!

Best Places To See the Parade:

There are several places to view the Parade of Lights around San Diego Bay. However, with more than 80,000 spectators viewing the Parade of Lights, some places can get crowded early.

Less crowded viewing areas include the north and south ends of the Embarcadero, the bayside pathway along Coronado and the waterfront park behind Seaport Village. Parking in the area fills quickly, so spectators are urged to use public transit to reach downtown. Trolley stations with parking lots that provide convenient service to the northern Embarcadero area include Fashion Valley, Old Town and American Plaza.

The San Diego Bay Parade of Lights will be held on Sunday, December 13, 2009 and again on Sunday, December 20, 2009, beginning at 5:30 pm with a fireworks display and ending at approximately 9:00 pm. This family friendly event is free to the public.

See you at the Parade of Lights, San Diego!
