Kid Friendly Matinee Performances at California Center For the Arts, Escondido

October 2011 to May 2012 – Live, Kid Friendly Theater; All Seats $3.00 Each
Introduce your students to live theater through a series of weekday matinee performances at the California Center for the Arts, Escondido. Each show is connected to a variety of curriculum areas such as history, literature, science, music, and dance, making this monthly event ideal for all eager students and educators. A standards-based Educators’ Guide is provided at no charge and includes pre and post show activities, historical content and other resources to explore with your students.
All seats at each performance are $3.00 each. Advance reservation with payment is required. To reserve your tickets, call the California Center for the Arts, Escondido Ticket Office at 800.988.4253. The Ticket Office is open Tuesdays through Saturdays from 12:00 pm to 6:00 pm and Sundays from 12:00 pm to 5:00 pm. Refunds will be given up to two weeks before the performance upon receipt of a written request minus a $20 processing fee. Please be sure to give the ticket representative your email address to receive the Educators’ Guide and any performance notifications.

Science Magic! – Use the scientific method to explore secrets of magic that are based in science, while discovering that science is truly magical. Edutainment Arts presents an interactive and hilarious look into these mysteries for students in Grades K-8.
- Wednesday, November 16, 2011 at 9:30 am & 11:30 am:
TAIKOPROJECT – Back again this year by popular demand! Discover the power of Taiko as this energetic ensemble weaves traditional and contemporary sounds, taking drumming to a whole new level. These dedicated musicians educate students and have fun advancing this unique art form. This show is geared toward students in Grades 3-12.
- Tuesday, December 6, 2011 at 9:30 am & 11:30 am:
The Elves and the Shoemaker – Laugh and cheer when two merry elves arrive at a small village in the Black Forest to discover a poor shoemaker who clearly needs assistance. Their cleverness saves the shoemaker from a bleak and unhappy holiday in this California Theater Center classic! Recommended for Grades Pre K-5.

John & Juan: A History of the Golden State – Natives and immigrants discover their common heritage in this educational romp through 500 years of California history. John and Juan will lead students in Grades K-8 on this unforgettable journey. Program is especially geared for the 4th Grade California History curriculum.

JazzReach! – 9:30 am: Hangin’ with the Giants is a fun, high-energy, interactive program designed to promote the inclusiveness and accessibility of jazz while highlighting the music of jazz greats, Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis and Thelonious Monk. Recommended for students in Grades K-4.
JazzReach! – 11:30 am: Big Drum/Small World is an immersive, globally themed, multi-media program featuring performances of jazz composers from West Africa, Israel, Cuba, Puerto Rico, India, and the United States. The program features video interludes that help promote the value of creative collaboration, a way to explore our differences, share ideas, and discover common ground. Recommended for students in Grades 3-6.

The Green One: A Witch Misunderstood – Come journey with us alongside Dorothy, the famous trio of tin, straw and fur, and other characters from Wicked and the Wizard of Oz! Told through the eyes of Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West, this musical takes a closer look at perceptions, good versus evil, power, and free will. Produced by Canyon Crest Academy and recommended for Grades 4-12.

Mainly Mozart Live! – Learn the history of this great composer through this interactive performance. Students will journey through the dramatic life and times of Mozart featuring scenery and costuming of the period. A live educational music ensemble closes the program with beautifully played music that will bridge the connection between the audience and the composer! Recommended for Grades K-5.

Refuge in the Arts: Hip Hop from the Heart of Eveoke – This exciting and interactive hip-hop and spoken word performance not only explores ways to connect students to social issues but offers tools to navigate and transform them! Refuge in the Arts will spark the imagination with exciting choreography that connects hip-hop and other modern and traditional dance forms. The 9:30 am performance is recommended for Grades 2-5; the 11:30 am performance is recommended for Grades 6-12.
The California Center for the Arts, Escondido is located at 340 North Escondido Boulevard, Escondido, CA. The Weekday Matinees for Youth initiative is part of the Center’s Education mandate. All performances are kid friendly and open to the public. Tickets are $3.00 per seat and must be reserved in advance. Homeschool groups and school groups are welcome.
