April 23 & 24, 2012 – Free Event at the California Center for the Arts, Escondido

California Center for the Arts in EscondidoThe California Center for the Arts, Escondido presents the annual Spring Marine Band Concert on April 23 and April 24, 2012 at 7:00 pm. This year’s free concert features the 1st Marine Division Band based at Camp Pendleton with special guest artists “Country Current,” a lively Navy band from Washington D.C. performing country and bluegrass music.

The 1st Division Marine Band consists of 50 Marine musicians who “fulfill the objective of preserving values that comprise the unique and fundamental national strength and character of the United States.” Although their main assignments are military parades and ceremonies, the Marine Band does also showcase their talents and has performed at the Center for over a decade.

New to this year’s concert will be a stirring pre-show high school drum line competition starting at 6:00 pm. Participating high schools currently include: Escondido High School, Valhalla High School, Fallbrook High School and Guajome Park Academy. Each drum line will take center stage for a 10 minute set and will be judged for musicality, technique, staging and creativity. The panel of judges includes Lori Stephenson-Grasz and Heather Barclay from Palomar College, Steve Wright from San Elijo Middle School and David Whitman, D.M.A. from San Diego State University. The winning team will be announced from stage prior to the Marine Band performance.

This free community event is open to the public, and is sponsored by Dr. David and Lynn Tagge, and The Grand Restaurant in Escondido. For tickets, call 1-800-988-4253 or visit the California Center for the Arts, Escondido website.
