November 1, 2012 – Free Community Celebration of Dia de los Muertos in Escondido
The California Center for the Arts is presenting its 17th annual Day of the Dead Celebration. Día de los Muertos is the traditional Mexican holiday honoring the lives of those who have passed.
Beginning in 1995, this event has become a free community tradition for North County residents and beyond, bringing in nearly 3,000 visitors last year.
On November 1, 2012 from 6:00 to 9:00 pm, the community is invited to create memorials in memory of loved ones, by leaving offerings such as photographs, mementos and flowers within an artwork of the Center Museum’s permanent collection crafted by the famed Mexico City artist, Eloy Tarcisio. Guests will enjoy live music and entertainment, performances by Ballet Folklórico Tierra Caliente, art projects for children, and traditional refreshments including Mexican hot chocolate and pan dulce (sweet bread).
In addition, guests will receive free admission to the Center Museum’s exhibit “Heart & Soul of Mexico,” featuring works by famed muralist Raúl Anguiano and renowned photographer Mario Castillo.
The Day of the Dead (Día de los Muertos) celebration takes place on Thursday, November 1, 2012 from 6:00 to 9:00 pm at the California Center for the Arts, Escondido. This is a free, family friendly event.
