Critically Acclaimed Theatrical Production Cavalia Gallops into San Diego

November 2012 – Grand-Scale Multi-Media Show Featuring 50 Horses & 42 Artists Premieres at Petco Park

Cavalia: A Magical Encounter Between Human and Horse, an innovative multi-media and multi-disciplinary production created by Normand Latourelle, one of the co-founders of famed Cirque du Soleil, returns to San Diego this month with performances under its signature White Big Top, in the parking lot adjacent to Petco Park.

Seen by close to 3.5 million people across North America and Europe since its 2003 debut, Cavalia is a fresh mix of equestrian and performing arts, multimedia and special effects featuring 50 horses and 42 riders, aerialists, acrobats, dancers and musicians from around the world under a 110-foot tall tent. A 200-foot wide digital screen and a 160-foot wide stage draw spectators into a dream-like world. Conceived by one of the Cirque du Soleil co-founders, Normand Latourelle, and often labeled an equestrian ballet, Cavalia is a spectacular and moving tribute to the relationship between men and horses throughout history, a dream of freedom, cooperation and harmony. In a fairy tale setting filled with poetry and emotion, the show innovatively integrates acrobatics, dance aerial stunts, live music and equestrian arts. Under the White Big Top, a 50-meter stage permits the horses to express themselves in all their splendor, nobility and strength, often completely free.

“We have been eager to return to San Diego since Cavalia’s last visit in 2004,” said Normand Latourelle, President and Artistic Director of Cavalia. “The show has traveled across both North America and Europe over the past nine years and is continually evolving to highlight the strengths and personalities of new artists and horses. Whether you are or aren’t a horseman, it’s impossible not to enjoy these mystical creatures. With such a large equestrian community throughout San Diego, we are thrilled to be back.”

Delightful, thrilling and poignant, Cavalia’s horse training is based upon a philosophy of understanding horses, rather than making horses understand the humans around them. The tone of the show, embraced by the entire company, is one of mutual respect, kindness, patience, and trust. Audiences have found Cavalia exhilarating in scope, yet touching in the compassion shown by both horse and human.

Cavalia has received critical acclaim from around the world, including The New York Times, which noted that the theme of Cavalia is “Celebrating horses, humans and their bond,” while O Magazine called the show “Breathtaking!” and Jay Leno of The Tonight Show raved, “The greatest show I have ever seen!”

For its exclusive run in San Diego, which premieres Tuesday, November 13, 2012, Cavalia will be presented under its signature White Big Top in the parking lot adjacent to Petco Park, located at 1020 Imperial Avenue, San Diego, CA.
