National Tour Makes Stop in San Diego – A 21st-Century Love Story, where “Happily Ever After” meets “It’s Complicated”
The national tour of the hilarious new show You Say Tomato, I Say Shut Up!, a comedy that People magazine called “LAUGH OUT LOUD!”, continues its national tour with a premiere in San Diego at downtown’s Lyceum Theatre, July 24 to August 18, 2013.
Tomato is touring the country with stops including extended runs in Boston, Phoenix, Florida, Michigan, Ohio and in Pennsylvania, Philadelphia and Pittsburgh. The book was developed through sold-out performances at The Comedy Central Theatre and at Upright Citizens Brigade in Los Angeles, and made its New York premiere at The New York Comedy Festival in 2009.
From the producers of My Mother’s Italian, My Father’s Jewish & I’m in Therapy!, RESPECT: A Musical Celebration of Women, and My Son the Waiter, A Jewish Tragedy!, this uproariously funny story is sure to strike both laughter and trepidation into the hearts of any couple (not to mention every single man or woman who is contemplating entering the connubial state).
About the Show
After 17 years of marriage, writers-actors-and real-life-married-couple Annabelle Gurwitch (Dinner and a Movie, Fired!) and Jeff Kahn (The Ben Stiller Show, The 40-Year-Old Virgin) have adapted their hilarious, often moving, memoir, You Say Tomato, I Say Shut Up!, for the stage, directed by Van Kaplan.
This 75-minute tour de force takes a humorous look at a relationship that seems challenged from the start, by powerful, opposing personalities. But after trials and tribulations, they learn to navigate the conflicts that come with romance, money, and children by embracing each other’s differences, taking on parenting as a competitive sport, and dropping out of couple’s therapy. Their delightfully crazy lifestyle has managed to keep their relationship intact, up-ending every idea you ever had about living “happily ever after.”
Tomato runs from July 24 to August 18, 2013 at the Lyceum Theatre near downtown San Diego’s Horton Plaza. The Show is rated PG-13, with some adult content. Visit the show’s website for more information and to purchase tickets.
