Now Playing: Shrek – The Musical

October 15th, 2013

October 12 – 27, 2013 – J* Company Youth Theatre Launches Their 21st Season with Shrek- The Musical

J* Company Youth Theatre proudly presents the award winning show Shrek – The Musical, directed by Joey Landwehr. Join Shrek, a benign green ogre and unlikely hero, and his loyal steed Donkey as they set off on a quest to rescue the beautiful – if slightly temperamental – Princess Fiona from her tower guarded by a fire breathing lovesick dragon. Add the diminutive Lord Farquaad, a gang of fairytale misfits, and a biscuit with attitude, and you’ve got the must see musical comedy Shrek – The Musical.

Based on the blockbuster movie and the book by William Steig, with music by Jeanine Tesori and book and lyrics by David Lindsay-Abaire, the J* Company’s production consists of 72 cast members, 10 youth crew members and 4 youth orchestra members playing in the pit! Included in this fabulous youth cast are the following: Joshua Shtein (Shrek) from University City (Age 17 – High Tech High International School); Celia Tedde (Princess Fiona) from Clairemont (Age 16 -San Diego Jewish Academy); Sam Brogadir (Donkey) from University City (Age 15 -San Diego School of Creative & Performing Arts); Scott Peterson (Lord Farquaad) from Mira Mesa (Age 18 -San Diego School of Creative & Performing Arts); Samantha Tullie (Dragon) from Rancho Santa Fe (Age 15 – Canyon Crest Academy); Ian Laughbaum (Pinocchio) from San Marcos  (Age 16 -Greater San Diego Academy); and Adira Rosen (Gingy) from Mission Bay (Age 14- School of Creative & Performing Arts, SCPA).

Director Joey Landwehr brings a unique educational component to his directing when working with the cast. In his production of Shrek – The Musical, the themes of Difference/Protest/Acceptance are incorporated in the actors’ understanding of the characters they portray. His discussions with the Company are about being “different and united.” Working with the actors, Joey created an acting exercise; “Select the silliest thing about yourself that makes you different that you don’t mind sharing. This could be as silly as “I always eat marshmallows in the bathtub.” Or “I make peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and then take them apart and lick all the peanut butter and jelly and throw away the bread.” Then create your own “freak Flag” or protest sign. This could be: a large collage of pink and white marshmallows adorned with the slogan “Up with soggy marshmallows!” The point is be as creative as possible and make sure you have your own flag colors.”  He explains to the cast, “What is most important in life is to accept yourself for whom and what you are.”
