Thomas Gibson at Legoland Tree Lighting Ceremony 2012

Nov. 26, 2012 – Criminal Minds Actor is Guest of Honor at Legoland Tree Lighting

Legoland California will welcome actor Thomas Gibson as this year’s special guest to light the world’s largest Lego Christmas tree at the family theme park’s tenth annual Tree Lighting Ceremony on Monday, November 26, 2012.

Gibson, a father of three and long-time Legoland fan, currently stars on the CBS hit crime drama Criminal Minds and his credits range from comedy (Dharma and Greg) to drama on the big screen (Eyes Wide Shut).

More than 11,000 LED lights have been added this year to illuminate Legoland California’s tree which is created out of more than 245,000 forest green Duplo bricks. Adorned with 400 Lego ornaments, the tree towers over Fun Town in the 128-acre family theme park in Carlsbad, California. This event will also feature festive entertainment, fireworks and a visit from Santa himself!

At the ceremony, on Gibson’s behalf, Legoland California is donating $10,000 to Haven for Hope, the largest, most comprehensive Homeless Transformation Campus in the United States. Twenty-five percent of the homeless receiving assistance at the Haven for Hope Campus in San Antonio, Texas are children; half of which are under the age of five.

The tree lighting ceremony is part of Legoland California’s coolest holiday celebration ever, Holiday Snow Days and the new Winter Nights. Fun Town has been transformed into a magical, winter wonderland where the weather forecast calls for real snow every day and guests can build snowmen using Lego carrots and other fun Lego elements, throw snowballs at Lego themed targets and play with large, soft Lego bricks in the snow. Along with snow-filled fun, guests can enjoy festive entertainment and nightly fireworks December 26 through 31, 2012. New this year, Legoland California is extending its hours every Saturday night starting November 24th and nightly December 22nd through 31st for guest to enjoy the new Winter Nights celebration. All Holiday Snow Days and Winter Nights activities are included in the price of Legoland California admission.

The official Legoland Tree Lighting Ceremony with Thomas Gibson takes place on Monday, November 26, 2012 at 5:30 pm in the Fun Town area of Legoland California. Legoland California Resort is located in San Diego North at One Legoland Drive, Carlsbad, CA, 92008.

[VIDEO] Pirate Reef at Legoland California – The Countdown Begins!

Pirate Reef: New Water Ride Opening May 25, 2012

Pirates and Lifeguards Take Aim at Each Other as Water Cannons Arrive to Pirate Reef at Legoland California!

A battle took place at Legoland California yesterday as Lifeguards from Legoland Water Park and Pirates from Pirate Shores tested water cannons for the first time for the family theme park’s new ride, Pirate Reef, opening May 25, 2012.

Guests of Legoland California and Legoland Water Park are invited to board boats and plunge 25 feet down a chute between two pirate ships and make a giant splash! The fun doesn’t stop there…equipped with 12 water cannons, guests can choose which ship to board and choose who they’d like to battle: Captain Blue Brick or Captain Red Brick.

“Experiencing great success with both our Pirate Shores attraction and Legoland Water Park, we felt creating a pirate-themed splash down ride would be a great addition to our Park,” said Legoland California General Manager Peter Ronchetti. “Of course our Model Citizens (employees) take pride in each of their areas so it’s only natural for our Lifeguards and Pirates to want to take ownership of this new ride, but there is plenty of room for all to play.”

Situated in between the Legoland Water Park and Pirate Shores (and accessible from both areas), Pirate Reef features two massive pirate ships that stand 20 feet high and 40 feet long, a splash bridge that is sure to leave guests soaked and a pirate inspired brick building play area. Throughout Pirate Reef more than 30 pirate-themed Lego models, made up more than 223,000 Lego bricks, are featured including both Captain Red Brick and Captain Blue Brick, pirates, monkeys, parrots and more.

Stay tuned, the countdown has begun…Pirate Reef at Legoland California Resort is scheduled to open on May 25, 2012!

CLAWS Descends on Miniland at Legoland California

CLAWS – New Exhibit Opens at Sea Life Aquarium on March 1, 2012

Legoland California could have been the set of a 1950s horror movie last week as a gigantic Japanese spider crab hovered over buildings in Miniland New York. This alien-like creature was on its way to Sea Life Carlsbad Aquarium’s newest Exhibit, Claws, which opens to the public on March 1, 2012.

The five new displays in the interactive Claws Exhibit will feature gigantic Japanese spider crabs (which can grow to 13-feet across), coconut crabs (named for their ability to crack open coconuts with the power of their claws), fiddler crabs, lobsters and nephrops (commonly referred to as “prawns”). Claws also includes a touch display allowing guests to feel the shell textures of different crabs; a mechanical claw that guests can control and use to pick up objects; plus a new daily educational presentation.

Miniland USA replicates nine different cities completely made out of Lego brick on a 1:20 scale. “Often times guest enjoying Miniland USA comment on how fun it would be to step inside the cities and pretend they are a creature from one of those horror movies,” muses Bob Burhans, Curator of Sea Life Carlsbad Aquarium. “So our staff thought it would be fun to stop by New York on the way to the Aquarium before bringing this amazing creature to his new home. Who says Aquarists don’t have a sense of humor?”

More than a standard Aquarium, Sea Life provides an educational and interactive dynamic unlike any other. The Sea Life experience incorporates Lego models into a child’s voyage to the depths of the ocean, presenting the wonders of the underwater world to them in a way specially designed for their understanding. Featuring play zones, fun facts and quiz trails, Sea Life is designed to be a child’s guide to the life of the sea.

Sea Life Carlsbad Aquarium is located next to Legoland California (they share the same parking lot) at One Legoland Drive, Carlsbad, California. The new exhibit, Claws, opens to the public on March 1, 2012.

VIDEO: Star Wars, Pirate Reef, Claws – New Legoland and Sea Life Attractions in 2012

New Sea Life Exhibit, Star Wars Miniland Expansion, Pirate Reef Water Ride & More Planned for 2012

Legoland California Resort (C)At a recent Press Conference, Legoland California Resort’s General Manager, Peter Ronchetti, announced several new projects which will be unveiled in 2012. Not only is the Force returning to Legoland California Resort this year, but a swashbuckling pirate adventure ride – Pirate Reef – and a new interactive exhibit at Sea Life Aquarium – Claws – await guests coming to the family theme park in Carlsbad in 2012.

Here are some of the highlights of what to expect from Legoland California Resort in 2012:

Lego Star Wars Miniland

Star Wars Miniland is expanding to include new Lego models in each scene as well as a never-before-seen Lego Star Wars Gallery. Guests can already enjoy seven of the most famous scenes from the six live action Star Wars movies, as well as a scene from the animated series Star Wars: The Clone Wars all made out of 1.5 million Lego bricks and built in 1:20 scale. On March 29, 2012, Star Wars and Lego fans alike will be delighted to find even more detail in each scene. For example, in the Naboo area, guests will discover an “underwater” scene featuring an opee sea killer as it pursues Obi-Wan Kenobi, Qui-Gon Jinn and Jar Jar Binks as they try to reach the city of Theed. Other new Lego models include a Jawa sandcrawler in the Tatooine scene, Rebels caught in a net trap set by Ewoks on Endor and a new crystal tower standing more than 6-feet-tall on Christophsis.

For the first time, guests will be further immersed into the Star Wars experience as they walk through the Lego Star Wars Gallery encountering Lego “friends,” similar to giant mini-figures, from the Star Wars Universe. Each Lego model will be 3-feet-tall and displayed on a podium for guests to get an up-close look. The 12 characters featured in the Lego Star Wars Gallery are: Wicket, Princess Leia, R2-D2, Clone Captain Rex, Darth Vader, Han Solo, Luke Skywalker, Anakin, Boba Fett, Chewbacca, Yoda and Darth Maul. In fact, two new Darth Maul Lego models will be introduced in honor of the re-release of Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace in 3-D in February, 2012. One of the Darth Maul models will stand in the Lego Star Wars Gallery while the other Lego model will be life-sized, posed in a combat position grasping his double-bladed light-saber in one hand and reaching forward with the other.

The new models for Star Wars Miniland are being developed and built by Legoland Model Builders all over the world but it will be up to the Master Model Builders at Legoland California to bring the scenes to life with the help of animation electricians, technicians and landscapers.

Pirate Reef – New Water Ride

Legoland’s newest attraction, Pirate Reef, is scheduled to make its debut on May 24, 2012. Guests are invited to battle each other on the high seas as they blast water cannons, try to avoid getting drenched on the main bridge and plunge 25-feet down a chute that splashes through the battle between Captain Red Brick and Captain Blue Brick. The splash bridge, water cannons and brick building play area are the three main interactive components of this multi-million dollar attraction which will be the first to be accessible not only through Pirate Shores within Legoland California, but also via the Legoland Water Park, the world’s first Lego-themed Water Park which opened in 2010. Captain Red Brick and Captain Blue Brick’s ships will stand more than 20-feet high and 40-feet long. The highest part of the ride will be 32-feet and families will plunge down the chute at 26 miles per hour. (Note: Minimum height requirement for Pirate Reef is 36 inches tall. Guests 42 inches tall or taller can ride alone; guests 36 inches to 41 inches tall may ride with an accompanying rider who is 42 inches tall or taller.)

Claws – New Exhibit at Sea Life Aquarium

This Spring, crustaceans will be scuttling around at Sea Life Carlsbad Aquarium at the Legoland California Resort with the opening of its newest interactive exhibit, “Claws.” The five new displays will include Japanese spider crabs – which can grow to 13-feet across – and coconut crabs – named for their ability to crack open coconuts with the power of their claws. Along with the gigantic Japanese spider crabs and coconut crabs, the exhibit will feature land crabs, lobsters and nephrops, commonly referred to as “prawns.”

The Claws Exhibit will allow guests to see the extraordinary weapons and defenses of these fascinating clawed creatures and will also include: an interactive floor projection that reacts when kids move over it; a touch display allowing guests to feel the shell textures of different crabs; plus a new daily educational presentation and feed.

A Look Ahead to 2013 – Legoland Hotel

At the entrance to Legoland California Resort, the nation’s first Legoland Hotel is currently under construction. Guests entering the Resort can now see images along the construction fences of what the guest rooms will look like when the unique hotel opens in 2013.

All of the new 2012 guest experiences are included in the cost of admission to Legoland California Resort properties.
