Tony Hawk at Legoland Tree Lighting Ceremony 2011

NEW: Check out our video coverage of Tony Hawk at Legoland

November 28, 2011 – Tony Hawk Flips the Switch at Legoland’s Tree Lighting Ceremony

Skateboarding legend Tony Hawk will light the world’s largest Lego Christmas Tree at Legoland California’s ninth annual Tree Lighting Ceremony on Monday, November 28, 2011. Guests of Legoland California are invited to gather around the giant tree which stands more than 30 feet tall, is made of more than 245,000 forest green Duplo bricks and is decorated with nearly 400 Lego ornaments including colorful bulbs and 1,000 lights.

Legoland will commemorate the occasion by making a presentation to the Tony Hawk Foundation. Launched in 2002, the Tony Hawk Foundation seeks to foster lasting improvements in society, with an emphasis on supporting and empowering youth. Through special events, grants, and technical assistance, the Foundation supports recreational programs with a focus on the creation of public skateboard parks in low-income communities. The Foundation has set out to increase the number of safe, legal skate parks for youth in low-income communities across the US. To date, the Tony Hawk Foundation has helped fund 493 public skateboard parks in these communities, which now service 3.5mmillion youth annually.

In addition, in honor of Hawk’s efforts to help youth nationwide, Master Model Builders at Legoland California are adding new ornaments to the Lego tree this year: 50 blue, red and yellow skateboards, each made of more than 250 Lego bricks, will hang from the Legoland California tree.

After the 30 foot tall Lego tree is lit, fireworks will light up the sky and snow will shower Park guests from above kicking off Legoland California’s month-long Holiday Snow Days. During Holiday Snow Days, Fun Town will be transformed into a magical, winter wonderland where the weather forecast calls for real snow every day and guests can build snowmen using Lego carrots and other fun Lego elements, throw snowballs at Lego themed targets and play with large, soft Lego bricks in the snow. The event will also feature festive entertainment, including a visit from Santa himself!

The 2011 Legoland Christmas Tree Lighting with Tony Hawk takes place at 5:00 pm on Monday, November 28, 2011. The ceremony will take place in Legoland’s Fun Town area. Legoland’s Holiday Snow Days runs from November 19 to January 2, 2012.

Legoland California is located in San Diego North at One Legoland Drive, Carlsbad, CA, 92008.

Legoland California : Mini LEGO Michael Jackson Installation Halted

Legal Issues Prevent Park from Installing Pop Icon in Miniland on July 3, 2009

Legoland California Resort (C)Earlier this week, Legoland California announced its plans to install a Mini LEGO Model of Michael Jackson in Miniland USA. The figurine was going to be the centerpiece of a scene outside of the mini Grauman’s Chinese Theater in the Southern California section of Miniland. A video posted on CNN’s iReport and a Twitter campaign invited viewers to comment on the various mini Lego Michael Jackson models created by the Model Builders, with the installation of the most popular LEGO Michael Jackson model scheduled for Friday, July 3, 2009.

Click Here to Read More about the Mini LEGO Michael Jackson Installation Plans and Proposed Figurines

Model Builder in Miniland USA - Photo Courtesy of Legoland CaliforniaMiniland is the heart of Legoland California and is where you can find miniature versions of nine geographical areas from around the country including Washington D.C., Southern California, New York, Las Vegas and New Orleans. The area features four-inch-tall replicas of several iconic figures including President Barack Obama and Aretha Franklin in Miniland Washington D.C. and Elvis Presley in the Grand Central Terminal in Miniland New York.

Unfortunately, the King of Pop will not be gracing the lawns of Miniland USA. Legoland has announced that, due to unresolved legal issues, Legoland California is no longer moving forward with its plan to install a model of Michael Jackson in Miniland U.S.A. as a tribute to the pop icon’s historical contribution to the history of music.

“We were looking forward to installing a small tribute to Michael Jackson in Miniland,” said Peter Ronchetti, General Manager of Legoland California Resort. “However, legal matters have come to light that prevent us from displaying the model in the Park.”

Another bad week for Michael Jackson, it seems…

Legoland California to Immortalize Michael Jackson : Which MJ Will it Be?

UPDATE: July 2, 2009 – 1:30 pm – Mini LEGO Michael Jackson Tribute Halted Due to Unresolved Legal Issues. Get the Scoop: Legoland California : Mini LEGO Michael Jackson Installation Halted

July 3, 2009: Mini Michael Jackson Will Be Installed in Miniland; Help Decide Which MJ the Model Builders Will Use

Legoland California Resort (C)Michael Jackson, the proclaimed “King of Pop”, is joining Miniland U.S.A. as a resident of Miniland Southern California at Legoland California. Model Builders are using hundreds of LEGO bricks to create a Michael Jackson scene which will depict the late Jackson getting out of a limousine surrounded by paparazzi and fans. The marquee at Grauman’s Chinese Theatre will be updated to read “Thriller” as well. The front of Grauman’s Chinese Theatre was selected for the Miniland scene since Jackson’s star on the Walk of Fame is right in front of the Hollywood landmark.

Michael Jackson joins an esteemed group of iconic LEGO figures who can be found throughout Miniland U.S.A. including President Barack Obama and Aretha Franklin in Miniland Washington D.C. and Elvis Presley in the Grand Central Terminal in Miniland New York.

Legoland California thought it would be fitting to include Michael Jackson in Miniland for his historical contributions to the world of music. One of the few artists to have been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice, some of Jackson’s other achievements include multiple Guinness World Records – including one for “Most Successful Entertainer of All Time” – 13 Grammy Awards, 13 solo number one singles and the sale of 750 million records worldwide.

Michael Jackson silhouetteWhile trying to capture the most recognizable version of Jackson, the three Model Builders working on the project have actually created five different versions:

  1. Michael Jackson – Billy Jean
  2. Michael Jackson – Bad
  3. Michael Jackson – Moonwalking
  4. Michael Jackson – Thriller
  5. Michael Jackson – “Pseudo Military” Outfit

The Model Builders are asking viewers to take a look at the various versions of the LEGO Michael Jackson and comment on which model is the most fitting. The most popular model will be installed on Friday, July 3, 2009 before the Park opens and just in time for the July 4th long weekend and Red White and Boom! Celebrations.
