San Diego Zoo – Founder’s Day 2008

San Diego Zoo

Founder’s Day 2008 cancelled; Kids Free Days in October promotion extended to include both the San Diego Zoo and the Wild Animal Park.

Founder’s Day, traditionally held on the first Monday in October, marks the day the Zoological Society of San Diego was founded. To commemorate the milestone, all visitors – adults and children alike – are invited to enjoy the San Diego Zoo for free.

This will not be the case for 2008.

Because of unmanageable crowds (close to 40,000 people turned out last year; compare that to a typical busy summer day at the Zoo, which draws roughly 22,000 visitors) and more than 10% of the Zoo closed for construction of the new Elephant Mesa, the Zoological Society has decided to cancel the 2008 Founder’s Day free admission event, which would have taken place on Monday, October 6, 2008.

To make up for the change, October’s Kids Free Days promotion has been expanded to include both the Zoo and the Wild Animal Park. Zoo officials will also be issuing up to 250,000 free tickets thorough charities during the year.
